Its been a pretty long while since i last set foot at Boat Quay. The last time i stepped foot here, prolly a year back, was for an interview session with the bank next door. I’ve always harbored the impression that Boat Quay was nothing more than a tourist destination and a street lined with pubs. If not for LIC’s food outing, i doubt i’d even find myself here on an early Saturday afternoon.

Char Kway Teow, which literally means “fried flat noodles”, is one of the most loved hawker dishes in Singapore. The crisp croutons of fried pork lard is what gives it its characteristic flavor. But due to its high fat content, Char Kway Teow has a reputation of being an unhealthy dish. To cater to the growing pool of health conscious Singaporeans, some hawkers have minimized the addition of oil while others substitute pork lard with Ikan Bilis and leafy greens instead.

Pasta in the heartlands. I believe its a pretty lucrative business considering that more and more of them alike are sprucing up all over the heartlands. During times like these, when everyone starts scrimping and going easy on their wallets, it sure makes great sense to settle for a plate of “heartlander” pasta.
